Program Description The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program provides students with the opportunity to study subject areas relevant to health career programs at Fanshawe College and to instill an appreciation of the professional roles, responsibilities and academic requirements of health care disciplines. The goal of the program is to prepare students for their chosen health career program. Admission to the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program does not guarantee admission in a subsequent year to any College program. Successful completion of the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program, however, does enable the student to be given additional consideration when applying for one of the following programs in 2019-2020: Dental Hygiene Massage Therapy Medical Radiation Technology Paramedic Practical Nursing Respiratory Therapy The practice of paramedicine requires a high degree of knowledge, competence, responsibility and accountability. Attributes of empathy, caring and compassion are paramount. Graduates from this program will have demonstrated that they are skilled, knowledgeable clinicians, with sound clinical reasoning and judgment in assessing, managing, and transporting patients. Graduates will have proven that their clinical decisions are supported by best clinical practice with ongoing examination, evaluation and interpretation of research evidence. Graduates will have proven effective and safe lifting techniques ensuring proper body alignment, positioning and coordinated communication for patients of varying size and weight under a variety of challenging conditions and circumstance while meeting provincial industry standards. Graduates will have established the ability to embody professionalism and commitment in the care they provide, actively seeking opportunity to improve patients' health, their own well-being and the health care system in which they will function. Graduates of this program are eligible to write Ontario's Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA) certification exam. Upon successful completion of this exam, graduates will be qualified for base hospital certification and employment as a paramedic in the province of Ontario. The Paramedic program at Fanshawe College meets all Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD) program standards. This program is also nationally accredited by the Canadian Medical Association and currently the only Ontario Community College Paramedic program recognized by the Canadian Armed Forces.
